Tiny Ultrasonic Piezoelectric Linear Actuator(TULA) is a revolutionary linear motor with small size and high performance. The TULA creates high force and speed with only a few parts. It replaces complex electromagnetic gearhead motors which have hundreds of parts. Electromagnetic motors have reached their limit of miniaturization. This TULA is scalable to much smaller sizes than electromagnetic motors, without significant loss of power efficiency.
Conventional motors are too large and use too much power to be practical for cameras. TULA, on the other hand, is a simple device that is easily miniaturized to security camera dimensions. Compared to conventional electromagnetic motors, TULA:
- maintains position when the power is off
- uses fewer parts (No Gears!)
- is more efficient for low heating and long battery life
- operates reliably over a wide temperature range
- offers quiet, ultrasonic operation
How it works ?
Piezoelectric transducer(piezoelectric ceramic + elastic body) change shape when electrically excited. TULA consists of two piece of piezoelectric ceramic and one piece of elastic body(made of beryllium copper) attached to a rod(shaft). The convex motion of the transducer causes lift in the rod of the TULA. The fast restoring concave motion overcomes the static frictional force between the moving element and the shaft and makes the moving element its position. Rapid vibration of the transducer at the ultrasonic frequency causes linear or rotary movement of the moving element. The operating principle is explained by the piezoelectricity and Newton’s first law. The TULA exploits the vibration modes of the piezoelectric ceramics, the inertia principle and the contact force of the frictions.

TULA enables more compact modules with lower power requirements for security camera applications. TULA offer significant advantages over older technologies used in this application. Compared to stepping motor, TULA have more small size, lower power usage, simpler structure, lower cost and more accurate position control.
